Senator Oluremi
Shade Tinubu, currently representing Lagos Central in the Senate is 56 years
old and was raised in Ogun State. She received a B.Sc. in Education from the
University of Ife and a National Certificate of Education in Botany and Zoology
from the Adeyemi College of Education. She was introduced to the public scene as
First Lady of Lagos State (1999-2007).
As the first lady, she established the
New Era Foundation, dedicated to establishing centers for “all round development of young ones and to promote public awareness on
environmental health and community service.” As a result of her
philanthropic nature, she has made tremendous impact in the lives of girls and
women in her constituency. An example of one of her projects is the Alternative
High School for Girls. This school helps young girls who dropped out of school
due to early pregnancy, to complete their high school education.
As a senator,
Oluremi Tinubu has sponsored three bills to:
provide social security for elderly citizens; amend the labour
act, and provide Special Economic Assistance to Lagos State in view of its
status as a former capital city and the commercial capital of Nigeria. To
show her commitment to her constituents, she hosts a quarterly town hall
meeting to render accounts of her stewardship and obtain feed-back on their
developmental needs.
Quotable
quote: “I
think this Senate has an agenda, and that’s to give the people what they want.
Let us go back to our constituencies, and look at the needs of the common man.”
